    Chorionic villus sampling (CVS)

CVS is a method of taking a small sample of the placenta for biochemical and genetic analysis, in order to diagnose certain genetic diseases.

The placenta is a temporary organ that oxygenates and nourishes the fetus. Assembling from chorionic villi, which branch and build the placenta. The Villi have the same chromosomal composition as the fetus.

The intervention is performed between the 10th  and 12th  week of pregnancy.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.

The approach to the intervention is transabdominal with a special needle (needle – guide with mandrel), the abdominal wall and the uterine wall are pierced all the way to the chorion frondosum (placenta), and a certain amount of chorionic villi is aspirated. As the sex of the fetus is determined by determining the fetal karyotype,

this intervention is also recommended for patients at risk of transmitting diseases related to sex chromosomes. Results are obtained 24 hours to 48 hours after the intervention.
